The Gamble That Paid Off

eat & drink Oct 03, 2024

From corporate careers to cultivating vines, Curt and Janet’s journey to building a legacy in wine country.

Curt and Janet never imagined they would find themselves running a vineyard in Mudgee, but when Curt stumbled upon a vineyard for sale while searching for a future retirement property, their journey into winemaking began, driven by what they describe as “accidental stupidity.”

Initially, the plan was to lease the vineyard and manage the property as a holiday rental. However, the fires of 2020 and the subsequent impact of COVID-19 changed their course.

Faced with redundancy Janet decided to pursue a Diploma of Viticulture at TAFE, while Curt balanced remote work with weekend vineyard duties; and the pair soon found their backup plan very much a full-time passion project.

The vineyard, once renowned for producing some of the best Cabernet grapes in Mudgee, continues to build on that legacy. In 2021, they produced their first batch of Cabernet Sauvignon, aptly named “The Gamble,” a nod to the risky venture they had embarked upon.

Since then, they have expanded their offerings to nine different varieties, with their Cab Sav wine names reflect the challenges and triumphs of each vintage—2022’s “Gumboots” and 2023’s “Textbook” are just a few examples.

Visitors to McIntosh Estate can expect a personal and immersive experience. Tastings are conducted by Curt and Janet themselves, allowing guests to hear firsthand the highs and lows of the couple’s winemaking journey.

The rustic cellar door, with its stunning views of the vines and Mudgee hills, provides the perfect backdrop for sampling their carefully crafted wines. Local products, including honey from the vineyard’s own bees, and small cheese plates, add to the charm of the visit. As a token of appreciation, they also offer a 10% discount to Mudgee locals.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine lover or a curious traveler, Curt and Janet invite everyone to experience their wines and the passion and dedication they’ve poured into McIntosh Estate.
